April 2012 Book of the Month

“A boy, an alien and football – without any shadow of doubt it’s a match made in heaven for boys in particular and if you have a reluctant reader in the house aged from 6-9 then you just might get him or her reading as a result of EEEK!  Apart from the storyline being a real page-turner it’s also laugh-out-loud funny.  Just how and why a football mad alien turns up on Charlie’s doorstep one day and stays with him will have you in stitches. Eeek may be fluorescent green with smoke coming out of his ears but just like ET he’s a wonderfully loveable alien, but this time for the 21st century.”

Theo  – aged 7 (on LoveReading4Kids)

I loved the football in this book and I also loved the alien because he was so funny.  The alien is just like a human boy apart from being tidy because he loves football and gets very excited when he is watching the matches.  He is very good at hiding himself so only a few people know that there is an alien. The book is very funny and mummy was even laughing when she was reading it and we were all shocked by the surprise at the end.  I will definitely tell my friends about this book – it is great.

I think this is a great book. With it’s alien and football themes I think it will capture the imagination of lots of children, and will be enjoyed by both boys and girls. I thoroughly recommend it!

Eeek the alien really comes to life with wonderful descriptions.

There are some great surprises I can’t tell.

It took me half the book to realize football means soccer!

The story was exciting. Eeek was amazing and Charlie was great. The description of the space craft amazing.

I had a very fun time reading Eeek!

    Thank you,

    Declan

Hi Declan! Thank you for taking the time to leave a review here and I’m so glad that you enjoyed Eeek! And thanks for pointing out the soccer/football thing! I did think about leaving a note at the front for my US readers to explain that ‘football’ in the UK means soccer! When I next update the interior I may do that! In the meantime, if you’re in or from the USA and are reading this please take note!

All the best, Declan! Karen :)

    • kareninglis says:

Hi Mustafa – I’m very glad you enjoyed Eeek! It took me 3 months to write but it sat in a drawer for 10 years!! And then I had to edit it some more! But everyone seems to be enjoying it! Best wishes, Karen

    • kareninglis says:

Hi Ateeq! I’m really glad that you enjoyed Eeek! I think it is fun that he sleeps on Charlie’s ceiling! When you write a story you can make the characters do you what you want which is great fun! I hope Eeek! has given you inspiration to make up some stories yourself! Thank you to all of you for taking the time to reply to me here! All the very best, Karen

  10. minhaj says:

How do you get the i dears for your books and olso how long did it tak to mack.

    • kareninglis says:

Hi Minhaj! I got the idea for Eeek! because my son George was too busy always playing football and he would never read a book! So I began to wonder what kind of story would make him read. And since most young boys like soccer and also aliens I decided that story about an alien who runs away from space to Earth would be a very good idea! After that I just imagined what a young boy would do if an alien turned up on his doorstep one morning! I decided he would probably keep him a secret from his brother but let his best friend know! I’m glad you enjoyed the story! Best wishes, Karen

Hello Karen Inglis I want ask you some question please. How long did you write these book for? were you proud of your self when you made Eeek The Runaway Alien. My favourite character is Eeek because his very funny and he likes football and I do.

    • kareninglis says:

Thank you, Ashfak! As I said to Mustafa above, it took me 3 months to write the story but then it stayed in a drawer for 10 years!! But when I finally got it out last year I had to rewrite some parts. Then I had to work with my illustrator to work out all of the pictures! That was very difficult – but fun! Did you read the print book or on Kindle? Karen

  12. Mariam says:

Hello Karen Inglis I have read Eeek The Runaway Alien and I think it’s misteriouse like when he was sleeping on the roof or when he took the suitcase out of his tummy and it was a realsuprise in the end what they found out about Eeek. Are you going to make another book about Xong? Good Bye Karen Inglis I hope reply to my questions.

    • kareninglis says:

Hi Mariam! Thank you for your review and first I must apologise because I had to change and cut out a little bit of what you wrote so that we keep some of the surprises in the story a secret! I’m might write another story about Eeek/Xong – I am not sure yet! But I’m glad to see that Eeek! has girl fans too! (Like me!) Lots of girls play football these days but when I was growing up they didn’t! Do girls play football at your school I wonder? Thank you again for leaving your comments and I am so glad that you enjoyed the story! Karen

  13. Hajrah says:

Hi Karen Inglis i would like to ask you some questions would you please answer them.Have you always wanted to be an author? Are you going to write another book about Eeek(Xong)?

    • kareninglis says:

Hello Hajrah! I always loved to write diaries when I was a child and then when I was a student I started to wirite short stories for grown-ups, but I didn’t do anything with them. But when I had my two children I became interested in writing for children – my first story was about an urban fox called Ferdinand – and I will be bringing out those stories next. Here is the website – they are for much younger children! http://www.ferdinandfox.co.uk

      Best wishes, Karen

  14. haroon says:

    • kareninglis says:

Hi Haroon! I believe in Eeek! :) Do you?! There might be aliens out there somewhere with all of those stars and planets! I hope you enjoyed the story! Best wishes and please apologise to everyone that it took me so long to reply. My website has changed and I didn’t realise that anyone had left the reviews! Best wishes to all of you and keep reading :))) Karen

      Yeah, actually I do

  15. Daniel Illis says:

I enjoyed your book very much and I was persuaded to buy it when you came into our school(Tower House,Sheen) and read our class the first 3 chapters!

    • kareninglis says:

      Hi Daniel!

Thank you for taking the time to leave your note here :) I’m so glad that you enjoyed Eeek! It was great to come along and visit Tower House after such a long time – especially because George and Nick were both there when I wrote it! As you know, quite a few of the boys’ names in the book are mix-ups of names from boys who were at Tower House at the time! It was fun to see that so many boys liked the story when I was there the other day! If you’d like to leave a review on Amazon (without giving away the story) that would be fantastic! All the best – and I hope you have a good summer! Karen :)

  16. Melissa says:

Wow Karen Inglis your book is great; I borrowed The Secret Lake from the library and at the back I saw Eeek the alien’s summary and my mum bought it from Amazon. Its great fun even though I’m a girl.

  17. Steven Walker says:

Karen, I really enjoyed your book because I like football and I was surprised by the ending!

    • kareninglis says:

Hi Steven – I’m so glad you enjoyed the story! And, yes, the ending is a surprise – it even surprised me when I wrote the story!! (The characters and plot take over when I am writing!). All the very best and sorry for the delayed reply – we’ve been on holiday in Italy.
